The curriculum provided by Greendown Playgroup

The Playgroup covers the 5 outcomes for children:

  • Being Healthy

  • Staying Safe

  • Enjoying and Achieving

  • Make a Positive Contribution

  • Economic Well Being

Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by Greendown Playgroup helps children to continue to do this by providing all of the children with interesting activities that are right for their age and stage of development.

The Playgroup provides the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for children aged 2 and 5 years. This curriculum is set out in a document, published by the Department for Education and Skills, called Statutory Framework for the Early Years foundation stage 2021. Greendown Playgroup follows this guidance.

The guidance divides children's learning and development into Characteristics of Effective Learning, of which there are 3:

  • Playing & Exploring - engagement

  • Active Learning – motivation

  • Creating & Thinking Critically – thinking

Areas of Learning & Developing of which there are 3 Prime Areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Communication and Language Development

  • Physical Development

There are 8 aspects within the 3 Prime Areas:

  • Making Relationships

  • Self-confidence & Self-awareness

  • Managing Feelings & Behaviour

  • Moving & Handling

  • Health & Self-care

  • Listening & Attention

  • Understanding

  • Speaking

There are 4 Specific Areas;

  • Understanding the World

  • Mathematics

  • Literacy

  • Expressive Arts & Design

There are 9 aspects within the 4 Specific Areas;

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Numbers

  • Shape, Space & Measure

  • People & Communities

  • The World

  • Technology

  • Exploring & Using Media & Materials

  • Being Imaginative

For each area, the practice guidance sets out Early Learning Goals. These goals state what it is expected that children will know and be able to do by the end of the reception year of their education.

The practice guidance also sets out in “Early Years Outcomes “ the likely stages of progress a child makes along their learning journey towards the early learning goals. Greendown Playgroup has regard to these matters when we assess children and plan for their learning.
